Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday extended his congratulations to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese following his party’s sweeping victory in Saturday’s general election.
“Spoke with my friend @AlboMP to personally congratulate him on his party’s historic victory. We agreed to work together with renewed vigour to advance the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and explore new areas of cooperation,” PM Modi shared on X after their phone conversation.

Saturday’s results marked a significant moment for Albanese’s Labor Party, which secured 92 lower house seats – only the third time in Australia’s history that any party has achieved more than 90.
Earlier, PM Modi had publicly congratulated Albanese, calling the outcome a ‘resounding victory’ and acknowledging the strong mandate from the Australian people.
The Prime Minister expressed hope for further collaboration, particularly in maintaining peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.

Meanwhile, Albanese, who also held talks with US President Donald Trump primarily focused on trade tariffs, revealed on Monday that Indonesia would be his first overseas destination in his second term.

PM Modi and Albanese last met in person during the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro in November.
That encounter also included the second Australia-India Annual Summit, held in anticipation of the fifth anniversary of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2025.
Both leaders acknowledged the substantial progress made in deepening ties across various sectors, ranging from climate change and clean energy to defence, education, trade, and science.
They noted that strengthened cooperation has benefited not just the two countries but the wider region as well.
Highlighting economic synergies, they pointed out how India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative and Australia’s ‘Future Made in Australia’ policy align to foster job creation and economic growth.
India and Australia continue to collaborate closely through multilateral platforms, including the Quad, alongside the United States and Japan.
