PM Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed grief over the tragic accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda district, where a vehicle plunged into the Saryu canal, killing 11 people and injuring several others.

The vehicle, carrying at least 14 people, was en route to a temple when it veered off and submerged.

Officials confirmed the accident occurred when a Bolero carrying devotees from Sihagaon (Motiganj police station area) to Prithvi Nath temple (Khargupur) lost control and fell into the canal.

PM Modi Announces Financial Assistance

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), in a post on X (formerly Twitter), quoted PM Modi, posting, “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to an accident in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in the mishap. May the injured recover soon. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000: PM @narendramodi

CM Yogi Offers Rs 5 Lakh Compensation

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also mourned the incident, calling it ‘extremely tragic and heart-wrenching’.

He directed the district administration to provide Rs 5 lakh in compensation to the families of the deceased. The Chief Minister also instructed them to ensure proper medical care for the injured.

CM Yogi also said, “I pray to Lord Shri Ram for the peace of the departed souls and strength to the grieving families. Om Shanti!”

Gonda Superintendent of Police Vineet Jaiswal said authorities rescued four passengers with minor injuries, who are now receiving treatment at the District Hospital.

The police are continuing their investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
