On the occasion of Swahid Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to the valour of those who participated in the Assam Movement, asserting that the movement will always occupy a prime place in India’s history.
In a post on the social media platform X, PM Modi reaffirmed that the nation will fulfil the dreams of the movement’s participants. He added that this includes strengthening Assam’s culture and promoting the state’s all-round progress.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reviewed the final preparations on Tuesday. He announced that the formal inauguration of the Swahid Smarak memorial will begin at 11 AM.
Officials will light the eternal flame at 4 PM to honour the memory of Swahid Khargeswar Talukdar, nearly 45 years after his martyrdom.
Sarma further described the inauguration as a historic milestone. He said the event marks the first time the state government is formally commemorating the martyrs on such a large scale.
“The memorial will serve as a permanent tribute to those who laid down their lives for Assam’s cause,” he added.
Statewide Participation and Cultural Homage
Schools, colleges, and public institutions across all districts of Assam will join the commemoration, which the state government will broadcast live.
One of the day’s most poignant gestures will be the simultaneous performance of the patriotic song ‘Swahid Pranamu Tumak’ in every district. This performance aims to unite the state in a shared moment of gratitude. It also serves as a powerful act of remembrance for the martyrs.
The Swahid Smarak goes beyond being a monument, actively preserving the memories and legacy of the Assam Movement (1979–1985).
The memorial features architecturally significant installations narrating the timeline of the agitation and its sacrifices, offering an immersive historical experience.
Dedicated areas for public gatherings, educational programmes, and cultural events support the Swahid Smarak’s development. Also, they help it evolve into a dynamic space of learning and reflection.
These features help keep the spirit of the Assam Movement alive for future generations.
