Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his greetings on World Environment Day and acknowledged the dedication of people actively engaged in protecting natural ecosystems.

In a post on X, PM Modi emphasised the need to strengthen efforts to preserve the environment while pursuing long-term sustainable development.

Recognising the achievements made in recent years, PM Modi commended the collective role played by citizens, policymakers, and innovators in improving environmental outcomes.

Taking to X, the Prime Minister posted, “Best wishes to everyone on World Environment Day. I would like to applaud all those passionate about environmental conservation. This is a day to reaffirm our commitment to protecting our environment and furthering growth that is sustainable.”

The Prime Minister noted that India has recorded encouraging progress in increasing green cover and supporting the recovery of several wildlife populations. He added that coordinated action, scientific approaches, and technological innovation have contributed significantly to these successes.

Celebrated every year on 5 June, World Environment Day seeks to inspire awareness and action on environmental challenges facing the world.

Organised under the leadership of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the event has become a major international platform promoting environmental responsibility.

Its origins date back to the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm in 1972, a landmark gathering that brought environmental concerns into mainstream global policymaking.

The first official World Environment Day observance followed in 1973.

PM Modi also stressed that environmental conservation requires participation at every level of society. He pointed out that everyday actions such as reducing waste, conserving resources, embracing sustainable lifestyles, and protecting natural habitats can collectively create a lasting positive impact on the planet.
