In response to the ongoing national outrage over the brutal rape and murder of a female doctor at a Kolkata government hospital, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized the urgent need for enhanced safety measures for women, particularly in the workplace.
During an event in Delhi commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Supreme Court, PM Modi described the rising incidents of violence against women as a serious concern.
The Prime Minister underscored the necessity for expedited judicial processes to address such atrocities.
“Acts of violence against women and children are pressing issues that demand our immediate attention,” PM Modi stated.
PM Modi further added, “While we have enacted stringent laws to safeguard women, there is a critical need to enforce them more effectively and ensure quicker justice.
The Prime Minister’s comments come amidst escalating demands for legislative reforms following the recent high-profile case in Kolkata.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, in her latest correspondence to the central government, has reiterated her call for central legislation and harsher penalties for severe crimes like rape and murder.
She criticized the central government’s response to her previous plea, labeling it inadequate.
In reaction, BJP leaders have criticized the West Bengal government for what they perceive as a lack of urgency in handling the case, urging a more decisive approach rather than mere political posturing.
PM Modi’s call for prompt action and justice was highlighted during the inaugural session of the two-day National Conference of District Judiciary at Bharat Mandapam.
The conference, organized by the Supreme Court, aims to address various challenges faced by district courts, including infrastructure, human resources, and judicial security.
The conference will feature five sessions focused on improving district judiciary operations, reflecting the government’s commitment to enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the judicial system in dealing with crimes, particularly those against women.
