Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday intensified his political offensive against the Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), accusing them of obstructing Puducherry’s development and presiding over a period marked by corruption, inefficiency and hardship for the poor.
Addressing a public meeting in the Union Territory, he alleged that the Congress-DMK combine failed to provide clean and accountable governance when it was in power.
He said the people of Puducherry suffered during Congress and DMK rule, alleging that corruption flourished, crime rose, and the poor were pushed to the margins.
He claimed the previous government allowed governance standards to decline and said families struggled to access essential commodities through the public distribution system.
“Ration shops often ran out of rice. Congress treated Puducherry like its own ATM,” he alleged.
Turning to the DMK’s rule in neighbouring Tamil Nadu, he accused the party of fostering a political culture of corruption and deception.
He said both Congress and the DMK have repeatedly obstructed Puducherry’s growth.
“Whenever Puducherry tries to accelerate development, they create obstacles. They act as speed breakers in its progress,” he said.
Framing the political contest as a decisive choice, PM Modi urged voters to evaluate the past performance of parties seeking another opportunity.
He urged voters to remember the past record of those seeking to return to power.
He said the ‘double-engine government’ had shown that coordination between the Centre and the local administration delivers results and ensures welfare benefits reach people without leakages.
Calling for the rejection of divisive and corrupt politics, he said Puducherry deserves transparent governance and faster growth, asserting that the choice is between past misrule and a future focused on development and stability.
