PM Modi, Brazilian President Lula Hold Bilateral Talks At Hyderabad House

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva held bilateral discussions at Hyderabad House on Saturday, focusing on further strengthening relations between the two countries.

Earlier in the day, President Lula paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat.

The Ministry of External Affairs had indicated that the two leaders would review the full spectrum of bilateral ties. Prime Minister Modi is also scheduled to host a lunch in honour of the visiting dignitary.

Discussions are expected to cover regional and global developments, cooperation in multilateral forums, reformed multilateralism, global governance and issues concerning the Global South.

Jaishankar Calls On President Lula

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met President Lula separately and discussed advancing the Strategic Partnership. Following the meeting, Jaishankar said he was honoured to call on the Brazilian President during his State Visit and appreciated his guidance on strengthening bilateral cooperation.

He expressed confidence that Lula’s engagements with Prime Minister Modi would impart new momentum to ties.

Sixth Visit, Expanding Engagement

President Lula arrived in India on February 18 to attend the second AI Impact Summit. He is accompanied by around 14 ministers and a large delegation of leading Brazilian CEOs. The ministers are scheduled to meet their Indian counterparts, while business leaders will participate in a Business Forum during the visit.

This marks Lula’s sixth visit to India. He first came in 2004 as the Guest of Honour at Republic Day celebrations and last visited for the G20 Summit in September 2023. Prime Minister Modi paid a State Visit to Brasilia from July 7–8, 2025, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years. The two leaders also met in Johannesburg during the G20 in November 2025.

Strategic Partnership Since 2006

India and Brazil have been Strategic Partners since 2006, anchored in shared democratic values and strong people-to-people ties. Brazil is India’s largest trading partner in the LAC region, with cooperation spanning trade and investment, defence, energy, agriculture, health, renewables, critical minerals, science and technology, Digital Public Infrastructure, AI and space. The two nations also share common positions on UN reforms, climate change and counter-terrorism.

The State Visit is expected to help chart a forward-looking agenda to deepen engagement across bilateral, regional and global platforms.
