Brazilian President Lula da Silva was accorded a ceremonial welcome at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan on Saturday, marking the formal start of his State Visit to India. President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the visiting leader.
Later in the day, Prime Minister Modi and President Lula are scheduled to hold bilateral talks to review the full spectrum of relations between the two Global South partners. The Prime Minister will also host a lunch in honour of the Brazilian President.
Discussions are expected to cover regional and global issues of mutual interest, including cooperation in multilateral forums, reformed multilateralism, global governance, and matters concerning the Global South.
High-Level Engagements And Delegation
During his February 18–22 State Visit, President Lula participated in the second AI Impact Summit. President Murmu is set to host a banquet in his honour, while Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar are expected to call on him.
The Brazilian President is accompanied by around 14 ministers and a large delegation of leading CEOs from Brazilian companies. The visiting ministers will engage with their Indian counterparts, and business leaders are slated to attend a Business Forum organised during the visit, reflecting expanding commercial ties.
A Longstanding Strategic Partnership
This marks President Lula’s sixth visit to India. He first travelled to the country in 2004 as the Guest of Honour at Republic Day celebrations and most recently attended the G20 Summit in September 2023.
Prime Minister Modi paid a State Visit to Brasilia from July 7–8, 2025, the first such visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years. The two leaders also met in Johannesburg during the G20 in November 2025.
India and Brazil have shared a Strategic Partnership since 2006, grounded in democratic values and strong people-to-people ties. Brazil is India’s largest trading partner in the LAC region, with cooperation spanning trade and investment, defence, energy, agriculture, health, pharmaceuticals, renewables, critical minerals, science and technology, Digital Public Infrastructure, AI, space and global governance.
The visit is expected to chart a forward-looking agenda to further deepen bilateral engagement across regional and global platforms.
