Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed confidence that Yogasana could eventually secure a place in major international sporting events, including the Olympics, as he virtually inaugurated the inaugural World Yogasana Championship in Ahmedabad.
PM Modi addressed athletes from more than 60 countries. He said the championship marked a significant milestone in yoga’s journey and gave Yogasana a global competitive platform.
“Through this championship, Yogasana will gain a new identity as a competitive sport. I am confident that in the future, Yogasana will also secure its place in international sports. Whether it is the Olympics or multi-sport events, if we work hard enough, positive results can certainly be achieved,” he said.
The Prime Minister noted that the first World Yogasana Championship would play a vital role in advancing these aspirations.
The event is taking place from June 4 to 8 and has brought together over 400 athletes representing more than 60 nations.
The championship marks a major step towards establishing Yogasana as a recognised international sporting discipline.
Organisers have introduced standardised competition regulations and structured contests across multiple age groups and categories.
PM Modi also highlighted the broader economic and professional opportunities linked to the sport’s growth.
“We know that every major sport brings with it an entire ecosystem. It creates new employment opportunities. As Yogasana Sports expands, new possibilities associated with it will also grow,” he said.
According to the Prime Minister, the development of Yogasana could create opportunities for athletes, coaches, sports scientists, researchers, and event management professionals.
Efforts to secure wider international recognition for Yogasana have gained considerable momentum in recent years.
Officials said the championship also features an electronic scoring system to enhance transparency and ensure consistent judging standards.
PM Modi said every participant had already become a champion by contributing to what he described as an important chapter in sporting history. He added that their performances would inspire young people across the world through dedication, discipline, and excellence.
