Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Mysuru, Karnataka, on Saturday to inaugurate the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Youth Centre (Viveka Smaraka) at the Ramakrishna Ashrama.
The memorial commemorates Swami Vivekananda’s historic visit to Mysuru in 1892 during his journey across India.
Chief Minister DK Shivakumar welcomed the Prime Minister at the Mysuru helipad by presenting him with a shawl and a bouquet.
Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot also received the Prime Minister upon his arrival.
The Prime Minister later proceeded to the Ramakrishna Ashrama to inaugurate the Viveka Memorial and participate in the dedication ceremony. He will also visit the Ramakrishna Ashrama School before departing for New Delhi from Mysuru Airport on a special aircraft.
Mysuru witnessed unprecedented security arrangements ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit.
Authorities converted the historic city into a high-security zone by deploying more than 1,000 police personnel under the supervision of South Zone Inspector General of Police MB Boralingaiah.
The security deployment includes one Superintendent of Police, one Police Commissioner, four Additional Superintendents of Police, 18 Police Inspectors, 40 Sub-Inspectors, 550 male police personnel, 350 women police personnel and 250 Home Guards.
Police tightened security around the Ramakrishna Ashrama, the Oval Grounds, Mysuru Airport and the Prime Minister’s convoy route.
Authorities closed traffic on 12 major roads to facilitate smooth VVIP movement and ensure comprehensive security.
The Swami Vivekananda Cultural Youth Centre has been established to honour Swami Vivekananda’s visit to Mysuru before his historic address at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago in 1893.
The centre aims to preserve his legacy while promoting youth development, leadership, education and cultural values.
