In a statement, the Union government said Madurai Airport is one of the oldest airports in Tamil Nadu and functions as a key gateway to the southern parts of the state.
For many years, the airport has supported domestic aviation by connecting Madurai with several major cities across India. With its elevation to international status, officials expect expanded connectivity and more travel options for passengers.
Authorities believe the upgrade will open new opportunities for tourism, pilgrimage travel and commercial activity in the region.
Boost for Pilgrimage and Tourism
Madurai is home to the globally renowned Meenakshi Amman Temple, one of the most prominent pilgrimage sites in India. The temple attracts millions of devotees and tourists from across the country and abroad every year.
Officials stated that granting international status to the airport is likely to increase visitor arrivals not only in Madurai but also across other tourist destinations in southern Tamil Nadu.
The state government also said improved global access could encourage more investment and strengthen trade relations.
Aviation experts also believe the decision may pave the way for direct international flights from Madurai to destinations in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, regions that have a large Tamil diaspora.
Currently, travellers from southern districts often rely on airports in Chennai, Tiruchirappalli or Thiruvananthapuram for international travel. Direct international services from Madurai are expected to reduce travel time significantly.
With its new status, Madurai Airport is likely to emerge as a major aviation hub for southern Tamil Nadu, strengthening global connectivity while supporting tourism, trade and regional economic growth.
