PM Modi Announces Ex Gratia For Kolkata Warehouse Collapse Victims

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced ex gratia assistance following the collapse of the roof of an under-construction warehouse in Kolkata’s Taratala area, which resulted in nine fatalities and left 20 people injured.

An amount of ₹2 lakh each will go to the next of kin of those who died, while each injured person will receive ₹50,000.

The Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) will release the compensation.

The roof of an under-construction warehouse collapsed in Kolkata on Wednesday afternoon, trapping around 40 workers under debris.

Rescue teams from the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Kolkata Police, fire services, and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation continued operations for nearly 24 hours, which were still underway on Thursday morning.

Officials said that they still fear a few workers are trapped under the rubble and deployed sniffer dogs and radar equipment to support search efforts.

Doctors have admitted all 20 injured workers for treatment, and two remain in critical condition at SSKM Hospital.

Kolkata Police have registered a suo motu FIR under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including culpable homicide and attempt to commit culpable homicide.

Authorities have arrested five people and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the collapse and fix accountability.

The tragedy has prompted renewed focus on construction safety standards and regulatory enforcement at industrial sites, as rescue teams continue efforts to ensure no workers remain trapped under the debris.
