Union Home Minister Amit Shah also remembered the soldiers who fought and laid down their lives during the Kargil conflict. He said Kargil Vijay Diwas reflects the Indian Army’s determination, courage, and unmatched fighting spirit.
Shah noted that Indian troops achieved victory during Operation Vijay despite confronting hostile terrain, freezing weather, and enemy positions on towering Himalayan peaks.
… pic.twitter.com/9mxJHP8fGs

The nation is observing the 27th anniversary of India’s victory in the 1999 Kargil War.
The day commemorates the 527 soldiers who lost their lives during Operation Vijay and recognises the dedication of thousands of personnel who fought under some of the harshest combat conditions.
The conflict, which lasted from May to July 1999, remains the only conventional war fought between two nuclear-armed nations.
Military operations were carried out across the mountainous sectors of Kargil, Dras, Batalik, Mushkoh, and Kaksar in Ladakh.
Indian forces successfully recaptured strategic positions from Pakistani intruders despite freezing temperatures, steep mountain terrain, and heavily fortified enemy locations. They completed the mission without crossing the Line of Control (LoC), earning international recognition for their discipline and professionalism.
The victory continues to represent India’s military capability and resilience while shaping the country’s defence strategy, operational preparedness, and national security approach for the years that followed.
