Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday paid tribute to legendary Assamese singer-composer Dr Bhupen Hazarika on his 100th birth anniversary, remembering his lasting contribution to Indian music and culture.
In a post on X, PM Modi said Hazarika’s voice carried the soul of Assam and the spirit of Northeast India to the entire nation. He said the musician gave expression to the thoughts and feelings of countless people through his music and helped bring communities closer.
The Prime Minister recalled attending the launch of Hazarika’s birth centenary celebrations in Guwahati last year. He said the legendary artist’s life and work would continue to inspire generations.

Amit Shah also paid homage to the cultural icon, highlighting Hazarika’s role in taking Assamese culture to the world stage.
The Minister said his music reflected the values that have helped keep society united through the ages and added that his enduring legacy would continue to inspire the vision of nation-building.

Born on September 8, 1926, Hazarika, popularly known as ‘Sudhakantha’ and the Bard of the Brahmaputra, created a distinctive musical legacy by blending Assamese folk traditions with themes of humanity, justice, unity and social consciousness.
Hazarika’s musical journey extended beyond regional boundaries, giving Assamese culture a wider national and international presence. His compositions addressed social issues while celebrating humanity, harmony and cultural identity. He was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 2019 for his contribution to Indian art and culture.
