Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are likely to be in Ahmedabad on April 26 to cast their votes in Gujarat’s upcoming local self-government elections.
The Prime Minister is likely to vote at a polling booth at Nishan School in the Ranip area, while Shah is likely to exercise his franchise at a polling station within the city. Other prominent figures are also likely to take part in the voting process.
Former Chief Minister and current Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel is likely to vote from the Thaltej area of Ahmedabad. Madhya Pradesh Governor Mangubhai Patel is to cast his vote in Navsari. Their participation comes as the state prepares for one of its largest local election exercises in recent years, covering multiple tiers of governance.
Polling is between 7 AM and 6 PM using Electronic Voting Machines, with vote counting set for April 28. The elections will span 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats and 260 taluka panchayats, putting over 10,000 seats up for grabs.
More than 4.19 crore voters will likely participate across nearly 50,000 polling stations.
The contest features multiple corners, with candidates from the Bharatiya Janata Party, Congress, Aam Aadmi Party and Independents in the fray.
This election cycle also marks the first implementation of a 27 per cent reservation for Other Backwards Classes, alongside existing quotas for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and women, a move expected to influence the composition of local governance bodies.
Over 20,000 candidates remain after withdrawals, while several have already been elected unopposed.
Campaigning has intensified as polling day approaches, with parties recalibrating their outreach strategies.
