PM Modi on Anti-Govt Mob Attacks in Brazil
PM Narendra Modi expressed “deep concern” after supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the country’s legislative building, Supreme Court, and presidential palace on Sunday.

In a bleak echo of the US Capitol invasion two years ago. Supporters of far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro stormed into and defaced Brazil’s presidential palace, flooded parts of Congress with a sprinkler system, and ransacked ceremonial rooms in the Supreme Court in Brasilia on Sunday night.
There were no immediate reports of fatalities or injuries as a result of their rampage. Since then, police have cleared the massive crowds from government buildings and arrested at least 400 people.
Since Lula narrowly defeated Bolsonaro in the October 30 runoff election. Bolsonaro supporters have been calling for military intervention to prevent Lula from taking power. Lula won the runoff by a narrow margin of 50.9 percent to 49.1 percent.
Bolsonaro has challenged the election results and has not explicitly conceded. Though he has stated that he will cooperate with the power transition.
President Lula da Silva stated that everyone involved in the Brasilia riot would be apprehended and prosecuted. “These vandals, who we could call fanatical Nazis, fanatical Stalinists… fanatical fascists, did what has never been done in the history of this country,” Lula said of the protesters. All of those responsible will be apprehended and punished.”
World leaders have condemned the incident, with US President Joe Biden calling it a “assault on democracy and the peaceful transfer of power,” and pledging America’s full support for Brazil’s democratic institutions.

Brasilia Governor Removed
Meanwhile, following the attacks on Sunday, Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes removed Brasilia Governor Ibaneis Rocha from office.
Earlier, Rocha apologised on social media for his failure to prevent the riot. “I’d like to apologise to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for what happened in our city today.” “He stated. “What occurred today in our city was simply unacceptable.”
