On Wednesday, Union Minister Jaishankar poked fun at the opposition for its clamour over rumours that the central government will propose changing India to “Bharat,” claiming that the Constitution specifically refers to “India, that is Bharat.” Jaishankar also requested that the leaders of the opposition read the Constitution.
Controversy on India being renamed ‘Bharat’
The rumours started after Rashtrapati Bhawan sent invitations to a G20 luncheon on September 9 on behalf of both the traditional “President of India” and the “President of Bharat.”
A few hours later, the prime minister was referred to as “Prime Minister of Bharat” in a government bulletin announcing his trip to Indonesia for the 20th ASEAN-India Summit and the 18th East Asia Summit (EAS).
India, which is Bharat, is mentioned in the Constitution, according to EAM Jaishankar. “Look, when you say Bharat in a sense, a meaning, and an understanding and a connotation that comes with it, and that is reflected in our Constitution as well,” Jaishankar added.

Administration engaging in drama
The administration, according to the opposition parties, is only engaging in “drama” because they banded together and dubbed themselves INDIA. Some even said they would explore renaming the bloc “Bharat” at the next gathering of the Opposition. Leaders of the BJP have backed the government’s action with fervour.

Congress politician Jairam Ramesh said that the ‘Union of States’ is being attacked after the invitation went viral. “So the report is accurate. Instead of using the customary ‘President of India’ moniker, Rashtrapati Bhawan sent out an invitation for a G20 luncheon on September 9th in the name of ‘President of Bharat’.
“Now, the Constitution’s Article 1 can be translated to read: “Bharat, which was India, shall be a Union of States. Jairam Ramesh said on the social media platform ‘X’, formerly known as Twitter, “But today even this “Union of States” is under attack.
