Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) figure Parth Pawar formally entered Parliament’s Upper House on Thursday after taking oath at Parliament House in New Delhi.
CP Radhakrishnan administered the oath, while senior leaders, including Leader of the House JP Nadda and Congress Chief Whip Jairam Ramesh, attended the ceremony.
At the age of 35, his induction follows a major personal and political turning point after the death of his father, veteran NCP leader Ajit Pawar, who died in a plane crash earlier this year.
Before Ajit Pawar’s death, his wife Sunetra Pawar had secured a seat in the Rajya Sabha. She later took charge as Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister and resigned from the Upper House, creating an opportunity for Parth Pawar to step in.
With the backing of the NCP’s legislative strength in Maharashtra, where it has 40 MLAs, Parth Pawar was elected to the Rajya Sabha. He had previously contested the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Maval but lost to Shiv Sena’s Shrirang Barne.
Developments Around Baramati By-Poll
At the same time, NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar met Maharashtra Congress President Harshwardhan Sapkal, requesting the withdrawal of party candidate Akash More from the Baramati by-election slated for April 23.
He underlined that allowing Sunetra Pawar to win uncontested would be a fitting tribute to Ajit Pawar, given the emotional context of the election.
The Congress leadership has maintained that its central command in Delhi will take a decision on the matter after due consideration. During the interaction, Rohit Pawar also arranged a video discussion with Congress in-charge Ramesh Chennithala to highlight the sensitivity involved.
Rohit Pawar also pointed out that the Congress had earlier demanded the registration of an FIR into the air accident that led to Ajit Pawar’s death, and authorities eventually lodged it in Karnataka.
“Following the loss of a stalwart like Ajit Dada, it is essential to view this election through an emotional lens as a true tribute to him,” Rohit Pawar said.
“As a family member and a karyakarta, I have appealed to Congress to withdraw their nomination,” he added.
As political developments continue in Maharashtra, Parth Pawar’s elevation to the Rajya Sabha signals both continuity within the NCP and a new phase in the state’s political dynamics.
