Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch a special discussion in the Lok Sabha on Monday to commemorate 150 years of Vande Mataram.
The debate aims to revisit the song’s historic journey since its first publication in Bangadarshan on 7 November 1875, while shedding light on its influence during India’s freedom struggle and its place in contemporary national identity.
Government sources indicate that the Prime Minister may highlight the patriotic song’s profound cultural impact and reflect on the evolution of public sentiment associated with Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s celebrated composition.
Opposition parties are closely watching the Prime Minister’s remarks.
During a recent anniversary event, PM Modi criticised the Congress for altering portions of the original composition in 1937, suggesting that the decision weakened national unity and contributed to divisions in pre-Independence India.
Congress leaders counter these claims, maintaining that they made the adjustments on Rabindranath Tagore’s advice to ensure inclusivity and respect for diverse communities.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to open the debate in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, emphasising the song’s legacy and its role in shaping national consciousness.
Procedural Framework and Tensions Ahead
The schedule for the discussion allocates three hours to NDA members out of the ten hours reserved in the Lok Sabha for the subject.
The Winter Session, which runs until 19 December, has already witnessed friction between the government and the Opposition.
Tensions escalated ahead of the session when the Rajya Sabha Secretariat reiterated that members should refrain from shouting slogans such as ‘Vande Mataram’ or ‘Jai Hind’ inside the chamber to maintain parliamentary decorum.
Opposition parties accused the government of sending contradictory signals, arguing that the ruling alliance often champions such expressions in public forums.
With differing interpretations of the song’s history and its political symbolism, the forthcoming debate is likely to generate strong reactions from both sides of the aisle.
As Parliament prepares to reflect on a key milestone in the nation’s cultural heritage, Vande Mataram appears set to take centre stage not only in the Lok Sabha but also in India’s wider political discourse.
