In the aftermath of the brutal terrorist attack in Pahalgam that killed 28 people, including one Nepali citizen, India has announced sweeping diplomatic and strategic actions against Pakistan.
These decisions followed a high-level Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday.
Addressing the media, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri declared that India will be ‘unrelenting’ in pursuing justice for the victims and will hold the sponsors of terrorism ‘to account’.
Recognising the gravity of the attack, India has placed the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 in abeyance until Pakistan irrevocably ends support for cross-border terrorism.
India has shut the Attari Integrated Checkpost near Amritsar with immediate effect. Those who crossed with valid endorsements may return by May 1.
All SAARC visa exemptions and Specific Purpose Work Visas (SPES) for Pakistani nationals are now cancelled. Individuals already in India under SPES have 48 hours to exit.
India has declared Pakistan’s defence, naval, and air advisors persona non grata. Similarly, Indian counterparts in Islamabad will be withdrawn. Both High Commissions will reduce staff strength to 30 by May 1.
The CCS directed all forces to remain on high alert. The government reaffirmed its zero-tolerance approach and vowed to bring the perpetrators and their backers to justice.
