The Indian government on Friday conferred gallantry awards on military officials for their pivotal role in Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives.
Authorities formally presented these awards during the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort.
The President approved a total of 127 gallantry medals and 40 distinguished service awards. These included:
- 4 Kirti Chakras,
- 15 Vir Chakras,
- 16 Shaurya Chakras,
- 58 Sena Medals (Gallantry),
- 6 Nao Sena Medals (Gallantry),
- 26 Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry),
- 7 Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medals,
- 9 Uttam Yudh Seva Medals, and
- 24 Yudh Seva Medals
The Vir Chakra, India’s third-highest wartime honour, was awarded to soldiers who displayed exceptional valour during Operation Sindoor.
Recipients included Colonel Koshank Lamba, Lieutenant Colonel Sushil Bisht, Naib Subedar Satish Kumar, Rifleman Sunil Kumar, several Indian Air Force pilots, and posthumously, BSF Sub Inspector Mohd Imteyaz and Constable Deepak Chingakham.
Operation Overview
Launched in the early hours of May 7, Operation Sindoor struck nine terror camps in Pakistan and PoK and targeted 13 Pakistani airbases and military installations.
The Indian forces reportedly neutralised at least 100 terrorists, while the Indian Air Force destroyed key command and control centres, radars, runways, and aircraft, including five Pakistani combat jets and a large surveillance aircraft.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described the operation as a balanced military response, showcasing India’s use of modern technology, intelligence, and precise strategy.
“Operation Sindoor is a clear message that India is tolerant, but will ensure the safety of its people and the dignity of the nation,” he stated.
Notably, several decorated personnel are sons of former IAF chiefs, including Group Captain Omar Browne and Squadron Leader Mihir Vivek Chaudhari, both fighter pilots like their fathers.
For the first time, two Agniveers received the Sena Medal (Gallantry), showcasing the vital role young recruits played in India’s air defence shield during the May clashes.
The Independence Day celebrations also commemorated Operation Sindoor with a Mi-17 helicopter flying a special flag, floral decorations themed on the operation, and a dedicated logo showcased at Red Fort, symbolising India’s decisive military action and the courage of its armed forces.
