India has mobilised a comprehensive humanitarian response in Sri Lanka following Cyclone Ditwah, which made landfall on 28 November 2025 and caused widespread flooding, heavy rainfall, and landslides.
The cyclone has tragically claimed over 400 lives, with relief and rescue operations still ongoing.
Under Operation Sagar Bandhu, India is providing urgent assistance, including food, medical supplies, and rescue support to affected communities.
To aid in the restoration of critical infrastructure, the Indian Air Force deployed a C-17 Globemaster carrying Bailey bridge units, along with a team of 25 engineers and medical experts, to Colombo.
This is the second C-17 deployment, following the arrival of a previous flight on Wednesday night. Indian field engineers have already commenced reconnaissance and begun work to restore vital road links damaged by the cyclone, ensuring that isolated communities regain access to essential services.

In addition to infrastructure support, the Indian Air Force continues rescue operations using helicopters in areas such as Kotmale, providing timely assistance to those stranded or affected by flooding.
The combined efforts of engineers, medical teams, and rescue personnel demonstrate India’s commitment to rapid, coordinated disaster response.

Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to India, Mahishini Colonne, expressed gratitude for India’s prompt assistance, acknowledging India as the first responder during crises, including past events such as the tsunami and economic emergencies.
She emphasised the importance of India’s ongoing support in helping communities recover and rebuild.
The scale and speed of India’s humanitarian response exemplify its Neighbourhood First policy and the MAHASAGAR outlook, which prioritise regional cooperation and disaster preparedness.
By swiftly deploying resources, personnel, and technical support, India reinforces its role as a reliable partner for neighbouring nations during times of crisis.
India’s continued engagement in Sri Lanka will focus on ensuring the restoration of essential services, supporting rehabilitation efforts, and providing long-term assistance to affected communities.
The operation highlights India’s commitment to humanitarian action, regional solidarity, and resilience-building in South Asia.
