Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the Constitution Amendment Bill for ‘One Nation, One Election’ (ONOE Bill) in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. The Bill proposes simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies by synchronising their tenures.
The Bill sparked protests from Opposition parties, who demanded its immediate withdrawal. Congress leaders accused the government of introducing an “anti-constitutional and anti-democratic” measure. Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, Shiv Sena (UBT), AIMIM, and others also opposed the Bill.
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi alleged the Bill would destroy regional parties and lead to a presidential system. He accused the BJP of using the legislation for political gain. Top leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav, and MK Stalin called the Bill a step toward “authoritarian democracy.”
Home Minister Amit Shah defended the Bill, calling it progressive. He criticized Congress for consistently opposing reforms.
The TDP, a BJP ally, expressed strong support for the Bill. It argued that the move would cut electoral expenses by over 40% and ease fiscal challenges.
The ONOE Bill, a key poll promise of the BJP-led NDA, has divided opinions sharply. Reports suggest the Lok Sabha Speaker may refer the Bill to a Joint Parliamentary Committee for wider consultations.
