In a tragic turn of events, one of the three accused in the gang-rape of a 14-year-old girl in Assam’s Nagaon district died after allegedly jumping into a pond while handcuffed. The incident occurred on Saturday morning when the police took Taffazul Islam to the crime scene for a reconstruction of the assault.
According to police reports, Islam, who was arrested on Friday, managed to escape from custody and jumped into a pond while being taken to the location of the crime. Efforts to retrieve him from the water were unsuccessful, leading to his death.

The gang-rape, which occurred on Thursday night, involved three individuals who allegedly assaulted the girl as she was returning home from her tuition center. The attackers reportedly dropped the victim near a pond, where she lay semi-conscious for over an hour before locals discovered her and rushed her to a hospital.
The victim, who was riding her bicycle at the time of the attack, is currently receiving medical treatment. Doctors have reported that her condition is stable.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma
Following the incident, police arrest two other suspects believed linked to the crime. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has vowed to take stern action against those responsible for the assault. He instructed the Director General of Police (DGP) to expedite the investigation into the case.
On social media, Chief Minister Sarma condemned the crime as “a crime against humanity” and pledged that no one involved would escape justice. “The horrific incident at Dhing, involving a minor, has struck our collective conscience. We will NOT SPARE anyone and BRING the perpetrators to JUSTICE. I’ve directed the DGP of Assam Police to visit the site and ensure swift action against such monsters,” Sarma wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
The incident has sparked outrage among locals, leading to widespread protests in Dhing. Residents have kept shops and other businesses closed for the day as a mark of protest.
The All Assam Students Union (AASU) has also criticized the government’s handling of the case, calling for immediate and decisive action.
