Om Birla addressed the Lok Sabha on Thursday for the first time after members rejected a no-confidence motion against him. He thanked MPs for participating in the lengthy debate and reiterated that parliamentary functioning must strictly follow established procedures.

Birla noted that the discussion on the motion continued for more than twelve hours.

The debate, he said, allowed members to articulate their concerns and viewpoints in a democratic forum. He emphasised that the Lok Sabha reflects the democratic mandate of India’s citizens.

According to him, every MP enters Parliament carrying the expectations of lakhs of voters and bears the duty of representing their aspirations.

Birla stated that during his tenure, he consistently ensured opportunities for all members to speak. He also encouraged hesitant MPs to participate actively in debates.

Such participation, he said, strengthens democratic institutions and parliamentary accountability.

Referring to constitutional provisions, Birla highlighted that the office of the Speaker exists under Article 93. He noted that the House elected him twice to the post.

Throughout his tenure, he said he has conducted proceedings with balance, transparency, and strict adherence to parliamentary rules.

Birla also recalled that Opposition MPs submitted the no-confidence notice on February 10, 2026.

Following the notice, he temporarily distanced himself from proceedings to ensure impartial deliberations.

During the debate, members expressed varied opinions. Birla said he carefully listened to every speaker. He thanked both supporters and critics, stressing that democracy values every perspective.

Responding to allegations that Opposition MPs were denied speaking time, Birla clarified that all members may speak but must follow the rules. He added that no special privilege allows the Leader of the Opposition to intervene at any moment.

Citing Article 372, Birla said MPs must provide notice and obtain the Speaker’s approval before raising certain matters.
