Odisha: 19 Injured As A Steam Pipe At A Tata Steel Mill Explodes During An Inspection

Tata Steel’s 300-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Meramandali, Odisha’s Dhenkanal, exploded due to a leakage, injuring at least 19 workers, five of them were critically hurt.

Around 1 pm on Tuesday, one of the steam pipes at 300-megawatt coal-fired power plant of Tata Steel in Meramandali, Odisha’s Dhenkanal, exploded due to a leakage, injuring at least 19 workers, five of them were critically hurt.

The accident explained

During an inspection, a steam pipe ruptured as a result of a gas leak, causing the event. When hot water dropped on some laborers and engineers who were inspecting the blast furnace, they were hurt.

The injured were taken to Cuttack for additional treatment after being transported right away to the Occupational Health Centre inside Tata Steel’s facility, according to a press release.

Tata Steel  issues official statement

“We are working closely with relevant authorities and conducting our own internal investigation. Safety remains our top priority and we are committed to learning from this incident. More details will follow as they become available,” the Tata Steel said in an official statement.
