No Double Standards, No Compromise On Terrorism: PM Modi In Malaysia

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday reaffirmed India’s firm stance against terrorism, asserting that there would be “no double standards and no compromise,” while stressing that New Delhi will continue to expand cooperation with Malaysia in counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing and maritime security.

Addressing a joint press meet with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Kuala Lumpur, PM Modi thanked his counterpart for the warm welcome and noted the significance of choosing Malaysia as the destination for his first foreign visit of 2026.

He highlighted the deep-rooted historical and cultural ties between the two countries, calling India and Malaysia maritime neighbours with centuries-old people-to-people connections. The Prime Minister pointed out that Malaysia is home to the second-largest Indian-origin population in the world and said that shared cultural heritage and democratic values continue to bind the two nations.

PM Modi credited Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for giving a fresh momentum to India-Malaysia relations over the past few years. He said cooperation in energy, infrastructure, and manufacturing has strengthened, while mutual investments have increased in the digital economy, biotechnology, and information technology sectors.

Security, Diaspora And Indo-Pacific Focus

Emphasising the growing importance of security cooperation, PM Modi said that collaboration in counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing and maritime security would be further strengthened, along with more comprehensive defence cooperation.

On terrorism, he reiterated India’s position, stating that while India will continue to support peacekeeping efforts, its approach remains firm, with no room for compromise or double standards.

He also expressed appreciation for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s commitment to enhancing bilateral ties and voiced confidence in working together towards the goals of Prosperous Malaysia and Viksit Bharat.

The Prime Minister described the Indian diaspora in Malaysia as a ‘living bridge’ between the two nations, calling the community of 30 lakh people a major strength of the relationship. He said welfare measures such as the Social Security Agreement for Indian workers, a gratis e-visa and the UPI digital interface for tourism would simplify the lives of citizens of both countries.

Highlighting cultural connections, PM Modi spoke about the strong presence of the Tamil language in Malaysia across education, media and cultural life, expressing confidence that the Audio Visual Agreement signed during the visit would further strengthen ties through film and music.

He also underlined India’s commitment to ASEAN centrality and peace, development and stability in the Indo-Pacific region, describing it as an emerging hub of global growth. PM Modi congratulated Malaysia on its successful ASEAN leadership and said both sides agreed to complete the review of the ASEAN-India trade agreements soon.

Earlier in the day, the two leaders held delegation-level talks covering defence, security and several other sectors. PM Modi was accorded a ceremonial welcome at Perdana Putra in Putrajaya. The visit is being seen as a significant step toward deepening the enduring friendship between India and Malaysia, grounded in mutual trust, shared values and common aspirations for the future.
