During his visit to Kuala Lumpur, PM Modi highlighted the enduring cultural connection between India and Malaysia through the Tamil language.
Addressing a joint press meet with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, he said, “Shared love for the Tamil language also connects India and Malaysia.”
He noted the strong presence of Tamil in Malaysian education, media, and cultural life, adding that the new Audio Visual Agreement will further deepen cultural engagement, particularly through Tamil films and music.
Earlier, PM Modi praised the grand celebration of Indian culture at the ‘Selamat Datang Modiji’ event, which attracted over 12,000 participants from the Indian diaspora and friends of India, including PM Anwar Ibrahim.
He highlighted Malaysia’s large Indian-origin community and the shared cultural understanding fostered by common linguistic and artistic ties.
The Prime Minister also noted the influence of saints such as Thiruvalluvar and Swami Vivekananda, as well as the popularity of Thaipusam celebrations and Garba in Malaysia.
He emphasised that the Tamil diaspora has preserved its traditions over centuries and continues to contribute to society.
PM Modi announced plans to establish a Thiruvalluvar Centre at the University of Malaya, complementing the existing Thiruvalluvar Chair, as a symbol of shared heritage and cultural exchange.
He further noted the prominence of Tamil leaders in India, citing the Vice President, External Affairs Minister, Finance Minister, and Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting as examples of Tamil contributions to national service.
Through these initiatives, PM Modi underscored Tamil as India’s cultural gift to the world and a lasting bridge between India and Malaysia.
