On Tuesday, police successfully rescued nine Chenchu tribals, including two children, from floods in Telangana’s Nagarkurnool district. The group had been stranded on a hillock since Monday after seeking refuge there when the Dindi stream overflowed.
Authorities from the Nagarkurnool and Nalgonda districts coordinated a rescue operation, which culminated in the safe recovery of the tribals on Tuesday morning. MLAs Chikkudu Vamshi Krishna and Balu Naik oversaw the operation. The rescued group also included two women.

The tribals had become trapped while fishing in the swollen Dindi stream. To provide immediate relief, police used a drone to deliver food to the stranded individuals.
Telangana Director General of Police Jitender praised the efforts of the police officers involved in the rescue. “I commend the bravery and dedication of Devarakonda DSP, Dindi CI, Achampet DSP, and Achampet CI for their fearless efforts in rescuing our tribal brothers and sisters. Your courage is a beacon of hope and strength,” the DGP stated on social media platform X.
He also acknowledged the leadership of Nalgonda Superintendent of Police Sharat Chandra Pawar and Nagarkurnool SP Vaibhav Gaikwad for their exemplary support during the operation.
Earlier, Nagarkurnool Police had rescued two shepherds and 200 sheep trapped in the Dundubhi stream on Monday, using drones to assist in the effort. The District Collector and SP supervised that rescue operation as well.
The recent heavy rains and subsequent flooding, which began on August 31, have severely impacted parts of Telangana, with Khammam, Nalgonda, and Mahabubnagar districts experiencing the most damage. Overflowing rivulets and streams have inundated towns and villages, disrupting both vehicular and train traffic.
The floods have resulted in 16 fatalities and damaged agricultural crops over 4-5 lakh acres. The state government estimates the total damage at Rs 5,438 crore. Officials should remain vigilant for the next five to six days, as the Meteorological Department has issued warnings for further heavy rain across 11 districts.
