Newly elected members of the Odisha Assembly took their oath during a special session that commenced on Tuesday.
The proceedings, presided over by Pro-tem Speaker Ranendra Pratap Swain, witnessed the solemn swearing-in of key political figures, including Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and his deputies K V Singh Deo and Pravati Parida.
The session also marked a historic moment as former Chief Minister and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) President Naveen Patnaik, who led the state for multiple terms, took the oath as a member of the opposition, a role he is assuming for the first time in his illustrious political career.
Between 18 and 19 June, a total of 147 newly elected Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) will be taking their oaths.
After these ceremonies, the election for the new Speaker will take place on June 20, with speculation suggesting that senior BJP leader Surama Padhi could be a potential candidate for the coveted post.
The recent assembly polls witnessed a dramatic political landscape shift, marking the end of the 24-year rule by the BJD in Odisha.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious with 78 seats, significantly altering the state’s political dynamics.
In contrast, the BJD secured 51 seats, while the Congress, CPI(M), and Independents secured 14, three, and three seats respectively.
Notably, in the outgoing Assembly, the BJD had held a commanding majority with 113 MLAs.
The oath-taking ceremony symbolizes the commencement of legislative duties for the newly elected representatives, setting the stage for policy debates and governance in Odisha under its new political paradigm.
