Leaders across party lines on Thursday expressed grief over Nepal’s devastating flash floods. They called for urgent rescue, relief and continued monitoring in Indian states that could face downstream impacts.
Bihar Minister Ram Kripal Yadav called the tragedy deeply distressing and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured Nepal of India’s support.
BJP Bihar chief Sanjay Saraogi described the disaster as terrible, citing heavy rain, damaged dams and more than 1,000 missing people.
Bihar Opposition Leader Tejashwi Yadav urged closer monitoring of Bihar’s rivers, particularly the Gandak, after witnessing videos of rising floodwaters.
Shiv Sena spokesperson Shaina NC offered condolences and said seven Maharashtra tourists remained stranded. She said Eknath Shinde and the Shiv Sena were coordinating with authorities for their safe return.
Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Prem Chand Bairwa called for every possible relief measure.
Bihar Minister Ratnesh Sada urged governments to respond compassionately to disasters.
JD(U) National Working President Sanjay Kumar Jha said reduced water flow had eased immediate pressure but stressed vigilance and called for joint flood management between India and Nepal.
JD(U) president Umesh Singh Kushwaha said authorities were monitoring dams, including older structures, and waterways every 24 hours.
JD(U) National General Secretary Shyam Rajak called the situation worrying and reiterated India’s commitment to Nepal.
DMK spokesperson T K S Elangovan expressed sympathy, saying natural calamities cannot always be prevented, but affected people need compassion and support.
Nepal recovered 162 bodies from the Bhote Koshi River by Thursday morning. The disaster caused extensive damage and left many people missing.
