NCMEI Chairman Meets Maharashtra Governor To Align Minority Education With Viksit Bharat Vision

The Officiating Chairman of the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI), Professor (Dr) Shahid Akhter, met Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma at Raj Bhavan in Mumbai on Monday. The discussion focused on aligning minority educational institutions with the country’s broader development goals and the ‘Viksit Bharat’ vision.

The meeting took place at a crucial time as India advances towards its ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ objective of becoming a developed nation.

During the interaction, Professor Akhter, an academic associated with Jamia Millia Islamia and former Chairman of the Jharkhand State Minorities Commission, briefed the Governor about the ongoing initiatives of the NCMEI.

“Autonomy and national integration are not mutually exclusive,” he said, reinforcing his belief that minority institutions must excel in education and innovation to contribute meaningfully to the Viksit Bharat mission.

Professor Akhter also emphasised that the Commission continues to protect the constitutional rights of minorities under Article 30(1) while encouraging their active participation in nation-building.

Governor Jishnu Dev Varma, who previously served as Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura and is also a noted writer, has consistently supported educational reforms.

In earlier interactions, he urged state universities to improve their standing in national rankings by focusing on quality and research.

Historical and Institutional Insights

Belonging to the historic Manikya royal lineage, known for its progressive 1941 constitution that ensured minority representation, the Governor shared valuable insights during the meeting on strengthening inclusive education frameworks.

Professor (Dr) Shahid Akhter expressed gratitude for the Governor’s guidance and support towards advancing minority education.

The meeting underscored a collaborative effort to ensure that minority-run institutions evolve beyond centres of cultural preservation and emerge as significant contributors to economic progress and social harmony. This engagement reflects a unified push to position minority educational institutions as key pillars in India’s journey towards achieving the ‘Viksit Bharat’ vision by 2047.
