A tragic road accident in Nawada on Monday morning claimed the life of a nine-year-old girl and left many school children injured after a van carrying them overturned.
The incident took place around 8:15 AM on Kamlapur Road in the Govindpur area, when the vehicle reportedly lost control, veered off the road, and fell nearly 20 feet before rolling multiple times.
Police identified the deceased as Arohi Kumari. Several other children sustained injuries.
Doctors have reported at least two in critical condition, while others are receiving treatment under medical supervision.
Eyewitnesses said the crash created panic in the area, with the van tumbling repeatedly before coming to a stop.
Villagers working in nearby fields rushed to the site and helped rescue the trapped children, taking them to nearby hospitals.
Preliminary information suggests that the vehicle, operated by a private school, may have been carrying more students than its permitted capacity.
Locals alleged that more than 25 children were inside the van, even though the design allowed for around 15.
There were also claims that the driver was speeding and possibly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, though officials said these aspects are being verified.
Police have arrested the driver and registered a case of negligent driving at the Govindpur police station. A medical examination of the driver is also being conducted as part of the investigation.
The incident has triggered anger among residents, who have called for strict action against those responsible and stronger enforcement of safety norms for school transport.
