Union Home Minister Amit Shah extended greetings to the Kashmiri Pandit community on the occasion of Navreh, marking the beginning of the new year in the traditional calendar.

Navreh, observed on the first day of the bright fortnight of the Chaitra month, marks the beginning of the Kashmiri Hindu New Year and holds particular significance for the Kashmiri Pandit community.
Devotees dedicate the festival to Goddess Sharika, a revered form of Durga, and offer prayers at sacred sites such as Hari Parbat in Srinagar.
The occasion is rooted in both religious tradition and astronomical belief, with its origins linked to ancient calendrical systems followed by Kashmiri Hindus.
Rituals associated with Navreh reflect a blend of symbolism and daily life, most notably the ceremonial thali prepared on the eve of the festival.
Filled with items such as rice, coins, flowers, herbs and a traditional almanac, it represents prosperity, knowledge, continuity of time and the balance of life’s experiences.
On the day of Navreh, families gather to view the thali as an auspicious beginning to the year, followed by offerings and prayers seeking blessings for the months ahead.
The festival, therefore, serves not only as a marker of time but also as a reaffirmation of cultural identity, spiritual reflection and collective memory within the community.
