President Droupadi Murmu granted assent to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, on April 6. The Bill formally establishes Amaravati as the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh.
The Union government also issued a gazette notification on the same day to implement the decision.
Parliament completed the approval process for the Bill on April 2. The Rajya Sabha passed it through a voice vote after the Lok Sabha had already cleared it.
The amendment updates the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, bringing clarity to the state’s administrative structure.
After Parliament passed the Bill, Lokesh and NDA MPs met PM Narendra Modi to express their appreciation. They acknowledged the Centre’s role in facilitating the legislation.
This development, however, marks a decisive step towards resolving the capital issue in Andhra Pradesh. It is expected to ensure administrative stability and support the state’s long-term development plans.
