In response to forecasted heavy rainfall and an impending high tide, authorities instructed educational institutions across Mumbai and Raigad districts to close on Monday.
The decision by the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Raigad authorities came after Mumbai received an unprecedented 300 mm of rain within a span of just six hours starting from 1:00 AM.
Initially, BMC ordered the closure of all schools and colleges for the morning session, extending the shutdown to include afternoon sessions as the deluge persisted throughout the day.
Raigad authorities followed suit shortly thereafter, halting educational activities across the district due to incessant rainfall, with other districts in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region likely to adopt similar measures.
Adding to the concern is a significant high tide LIKELY at 1:57 PM, measuring 4.40 meters, which poses potential risks, especially for coastal and hilly areas.
In the midst of these weather conditions, Raigad Fort, the historic capital associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, bore the brunt of torrential downpours.
The fort, situated 1,356 meters above sea level, witnessed torrents of water cascading down its famed 1,737 steps, prompting apprehension among visitors.
As a precautionary measure, authorities suspended operations of the Raigad Ropeway.
The closures underscore the authorities’ commitment to ensuring the safety of students and residents amidst challenging weather conditions, with continued vigilance advised as the region braces for further inclement weather.
