The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has summoned Debesh Chakraborty, a central figure in the ongoing municipalities’ recruitment scandal in West Bengal, for questioning.
Identified as a close associate of arrested private promoter Ayan Sil, Chakraborty must appear at the CBI’s Nizam Palace office in central Kolkata by Monday afternoon.
Sources allege that Chakraborty served as a crucial link between Ayan Sil and middlemen involved in the fraudulent recruitment process.
He has been name as a co-accused in the charge sheet recently filed by the CBI at a special court.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Chakraborty played a pivotal role in facilitating illicit job placements by connecting aspiring candidates willing to pay bribes with Sil’s outsourced recruitment agency.
Candidates allegedly approached Chakraborty, who, upon negotiation, recommended them to Sil’s agency for consideration.
Reportedly, the CBI has gathered information from candidates who secured jobs through Chakraborty’s recommendations, with some already interrogated.
Sources revealed that the agency’s inquiries have unveiled a pattern of cash-for-job schemes across several municipalities, involving positions such as medical officers, ward masters, clerks, drivers, helpers, and cleaning assistants.
Meanwhile, the charge sheet filed by the CBI outlines how standardized question papers were allegedly manipulated to favor candidates backed by bribes, instead of engaging a reputable testing agency for recruitment assessments.
As the probe continues to unfold, the CBI however remains focused on unraveling the intricate web of corruption and ensuring accountability for those implicated in exploiting the recruitment processes of municipal administrations in West Bengal.
