The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suspended the food licence of an EatClub Brands outlet in Mumbai with immediate effect on Wednesday.
The regulator took the action after inspectors identified several food safety, hygiene and operational violations.
The suspension took effect on September 2 under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and its associated rules and regulations.
The affected outlet operates at Royal Palms, Aarey Milk Colony, Goregaon East.
The order applies only to this establishment and does not affect EatClub’s other outlets. EatClub operates food brands including Box8 and Mojo Pizza.
According to the FDA’s official press note, inspectors found inadequate storage facilities for food products, packaging materials and chemicals. They further reported poor hygiene, insufficient handwashing facilities, inadequate lighting and ventilation, and shortcomings in pest control.
The regulator said the outlet lacked sufficient measures to stop pests from entering through its rear door.
Inspectors found that staff did not properly inspect raw materials for food safety hazards or clean them adequately before preparation.
The inspection further revealed that food handlers lacked mandatory protective equipment. This included aprons, gloves, headgear and shoe covers.
The outlet maintained inadequate records concerning employee training and medical examinations.
The FDA said the establishment lacked a proper system for addressing consumer complaints. It also did not have the required technical personnel during the inspection.
Inspectors found another licensing violation. The premises sold ice cream and carbonated beverages despite these products not appearing on the establishment’s food licence.
Citing consumer health concerns, the regulator ordered the immediate suspension.
The FDA suspended the food licence of Rani Diets Consultant and Service Providers on Kurla-Andheri Road in Jarimari, Kurla West.
An inspection there uncovered active rat and pest infestation.
Officials found dirt, grease, food residue and stagnant water in preparation and storage areas. Damaged flooring, poor drainage and improper waste disposal added to the deficiencies.
