The Monsoon Session of the Parliament is to commence on Monday, and this will mark the first sitting after Operation Sindoor, India’s precision airstrikes on terror camps in Pakistan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the session before it officially begins.
This Monsoon Session, the first since Operation Sindoor following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, will be held from July 21 to August 21. The session will consist of 21 sittings over a 32-day time span.
However, both Houses of Parliament will remain suspended from August 12 to August 17 to facilitate Independence Day celebrations. The session will then resume on August 18.
Key Focus on Operation Sindoor
The Opposition demands answers and accountability across multiple domains.
At the forefront of the debatable issues is Operation Sindoor after the April 22 terror attack. The attack took away 26 lives, mainly involving the tourists who were on vacation.
The Opposition has called for a statement from PM Modi on the matter. Also, it demands a response to US President Donald Trump’s repeated claims of facilitating peace between India and Pakistan.
Another contentious issue expected to become the focal point is the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.
The Opposition parties have strongly criticised the exercise’s timing and questioned transparency. Also, accused the government of trying to sway the upcoming state elections.
Meanwhile, the government will introduce several key bills during the session. These include proposed legislation on GST reforms, taxation laws, public trust regulation, sports governance, ports and minerals, and the preservation of geo-heritage sites.
The parliamentary panel is also expected to present a report on the new Income Tax Bill, 2025, in the Lok Sabha.
In addition, the Parliament is also set to debate a judge’s removal, adding to the weighty agenda.
After an all-party meeting held on Sunday, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju told reporters that, “We are very open to a discussion on important issues like Operation Sindoor. These are issues of great national importance. The government is not shying away and will never shy away, but is open to discussions within rules, conventions.”
He stressed that, for the government, rules and conventions are important.
