MLA Dr. Rajeshwar Singh Urges Law Minister to Address Deepfake Threats, Proposes Remedial Measures

The proliferation of deepfake content featuring Bollywood celebrities such as Rashmika Mandanna, Katrina Kaif, and Sara Tendulkar, daughter of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, has ignited a robust discourse on social media regarding the perils of artificial intelligence misuse. Notably, during a Diwali celebration, Prime Minister Narendra Modi voiced his apprehensions about this burgeoning issue. Subsequently, Rajeshwar Singh, a BJP MLA hailing from Lucknow, has taken a proactive stance by addressing the matter through a letter to Central Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, wherein he advocates for a fortification of regulations within the Information Technology (IT) Act.

Rajeshwar Singh’s missive underscores

Rajeshwar Singh’s missive underscores the ominous deployment of artificial intelligence in crafting deceptive videos, carrying the looming threat of pilfering confidential information. He accentuates the imperative need for legislative adjustments to confront the surge in crimes associated with deepfakes, characterized as a sophisticated form of digital manipulation.

AI-generated fabrications

The ramifications of AI-generated fabrications transcend the realm of reputational damage, encroaching upon privacy violations and posing a substantial menace to the foundational tenets of the nation’s democracy and social structure. He underscores the exigency of promptly instituting stringent legal frameworks to curb these deleterious practices, urging the revision of existing laws to rectify any inadequacies.

Advocates for amendments to IT Act

In his substantive recommendations to the Law Minister, Rajeshwar Singh advocates for amendments to the IT Act. Specifically, he proposes a 3-year term of imprisonment and fines ranging from 1 to 5 lakh under Section 66C for offenses linked to deepfakes. Furthermore, he calls for escalated penalties under IPC Sections 420 and 468, coupled with an extension of the imprisonment term from 7 to 10 years.

Impact of these techno-centric crimes

He concludes by emphasizing that the impact of these techno-centric crimes transcends the realm of privacy infringement, exerting deleterious effects on political stability and economic conditions. He underscores the urgency of swift and resolute action through stringent legal measures to preempt and penalize offenses related to deepfakes, thereby safeguarding the integrity of individuals and the broader societal fabric.
