Meta Removes 5.3 Million Child Exploitation Content Pieces In India Over Six Months

Meta removed 5.3 million pieces of child sexual exploitation content from Facebook and Instagram in India between January and June 2026. The company said more than 98 per cent of the material was detected proactively.

Meta uses automated systems, artificial intelligence and human review to identify and remove content that breaches its policies on child sexual exploitation.

The company said it has upgraded tools to identify suspicious accounts, harmful links and networks linked to child exploitation.

In its July 2026 update, Meta said its technology automatically removed more than four million suspicious accounts worldwide during the previous year.

It reported removing 36 million pieces of child exploitation content from Facebook and Instagram globally during the same period.

Meta said its systems detected suspicious off-platform links and other indicators of potential child exploitation. In India, the measures led to the removal of 160,000 accounts during the six months preceding its July update.

Meta said it reports suspected child exploitation to law enforcement through the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children. It follows applicable Indian legal requirements, including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences framework.

Meta highlighted its role in Lantern, an industry initiative sharing signals on predatory accounts and behaviour. More than two million signals had been shared through Lantern by the end of 2025, the company said.
