Raja Raghuvanshi Murder: In a significant development, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Meghalaya Police on Tuesday recreated the crime scene in Sohra (Cherrapunji) in connection with the murder of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi.
The reconstruction exercise, conducted near the Wei Sawdong Falls parking lot, aimed to retrace the sequence of events leading to the brutal killing.
The SIT, forensic experts, and the five accused, among them Sonam Raghuvanshi, Raja’s wife and the prime suspect, were present on-site for the detailed walkthrough.
Personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Meghalaya Police provided security during the operation.
Senior police officials stated that the reconstruction exercise aims to verify confessions made during interrogations and corroborate witness testimonies.
“This forensic mapping will help us understand the timeline and actions taken by the accused,” a police officer stated.
Superintendent of Police (East Khasi Hills), Vivek Syiem, confirmed the recovery of the suspected murder weapon, a sharp-edged blade allegedly purchased by one of the accused in Guwahati.
“We have recovered the weapon, which we believe was used to carry out the murder,” he said.
Psychiatric evaluation of the prime accused
On Monday, police conducted a mental health evaluation of Sonam Raghuvanshi at the Meghalaya Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (MIMHANS) in Shillong.
Medical staff at Ganesh Das Hospital recommended the evaluation, after which authorities conducted a mental assessment and declared Sonam ‘mentally sound’.
Police discovered the decomposed body of 28-year-old Raja Raghuvanshi on 2 June in a gorge below the Wei Sawdong Falls parking area, eight days after the couple went missing during their honeymoon in Meghalaya.
The discovery prompted police to shift the focus of the investigation and set up an SIT.
Police arrested all five accused, including Sonam, and presented them before the District and Sessions Court in Shillong on 11 June.
The court subsequently remanded them to eight days of police custody.
Three SIT teams have been conducting parallel interrogations to piece together the murder plot.
The SIT is expected to file a charge sheet within the stipulated timeframe.
Officials remain tight-lipped about specific findings but indicated that forensic reconstruction, weapon analysis, and psychiatric profiling will play key roles in building a strong case.
The murder of Raja Raghuvanshi has sparked national outrage and demands for swift justice.
Investigators consider Tuesday’s crime scene recreation a turning point in resolving the case.
