MEA Denies Political Clearance For Prajwal Revanna Amidst Alleged Scandal

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) responded on Thursday to the alleged involvement of Prajwal Revanna, Member of Parliament (MP) from Karnataka’s Hassan, in a purported sex scandal, stating that no political clearance was sought or issued regarding the matter. Prajwal, the grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda and a member of the Janata Dal (Secular), left India on April 26, coinciding with the voting in the Hassan Lok Sabha constituency, where he is seeking re-election for a second consecutive term.

Clarifying the travel aspect, the MEA highlighted that no visa is required for diplomatic passport holders to travel to Germany, where Prajwal is believed to be currently situated. The controversy surrounding the suspended JD(S) leader escalated further when the Karnataka government’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) rejected his request for an extension of seven days to appear for questioning. Consequently, the SIT issued a lookout circular against Prajwal, who remains suspended by the JD(S) pending investigation.

The unfolding scandal adds complexity to Karnataka’s political landscape, occurring amidst the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. In the state’s 28 parliamentary seats, 14 voted in the second phase, including Hassan, while the remaining 14 are slated for polling in the third phase on May 7. Notably, the JD(S), which previously aligned with the Congress in the 2019 general elections, is now in an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

This political realignment underscores the dynamic nature of electoral alliances, with the BJP aiming for a third consecutive term at the Centre and the Congress seeking to maintain its foothold in Karnataka after displacing the BJP from power last year. In the JD(S)-BJP partnership, the former has been allocated three seats (Hassan, Kolar, Mandya), while the BJP has fielded candidates across the remaining 25 constituencies, setting the stage for a keenly contested electoral battle amidst the swirling controversy surrounding Prajwal Revanna.
