May Brotherhood And Hope Guide Us All, Says PM Narendra Modi On Good Friday

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday highlighted the solemn essence of Good Friday, noting that the day reminds everyone of the immense sacrifice made by Jesus Christ.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Good Friday reminds us of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice. May this day further deepen the values of harmony, compassion and forgiveness. May brotherhood and hope guide us all.”

Observed annually on the Friday before Easter, Good Friday holds a central place in the Christian calendar.

Christians worldwide commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, whom they revere as the Son of God, through prayer, fasting, and reflection.

The day’s date changes each year, calculated according to the lunar calendar and the spring equinox.

The origins of Good Friday trace back to first-century Roman-ruled Judea. According to the Gospels, Roman authorities arrested and tried Jesus, sentencing him to death under Pontius Pilate. They crucified him at Calvary, also called Golgotha. Early Christians marked the day with mourning, acts of penance, and fasting, recognising a moment of profound sacrifice.

Over the centuries, Good Friday has remained central to Holy Week, observed through church services, silent contemplation, and personal reflection. It embodies love, redemption, and forgiveness, as Christians believe Christ’s sacrifice offered salvation and hope to humanity.

Communities around the world continue to commemorate Good Friday actively.

Catholics, Protestants, Orthodox Christians, and Anglicans observe the day in countries including India, the United States, the United Kingdom, the Philippines, Australia, and across Europe.

Believers participate in prayers, charitable acts, and meditative practices, reflecting on faith, compassion, and spiritual renewal.

The day encourages devotion and strengthens the shared values of empathy, hope, and moral courage across societies.
