Five members of a family were discovered dead inside their residence in a village falling under the Mahavan police station area of Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura district, officials said on Tuesday.

The police are treating the case as a suspected instance of mass suicide. Those found dead include an adult male, his wife, and their three minor children.

The incident came to attention after villagers noticed unusual silence from the household early in the morning.

According to police, locals grew concerned when the family failed to step out of their room for several hours. Neighbours then looked through a window and saw the family lying still inside the house.

Alarmed by the scene, they immediately informed the police, who rushed to the spot.

During the initial inspection, police found glasses containing milk placed near the bodies. This led investigators to suspect that a toxic substance may have been mixed into the drink.

A forensic team was subsequently called to examine the site and collect material evidence to assist with the investigation.

Video Points to Voluntary Act: Police

Mahavan Circle Officer Shweta Verma said a video recovered from the house indicates that the family may have taken the extreme step voluntarily.

“Prima facie, it appears that the man first killed his wife and children and then ended his own life. There is no indication of involvement of any third party at this stage,” she stated.

Police officials confirmed that all five family members were found unconscious and were declared dead following medical examination.

While poisoning is suspected, authorities said the exact cause and timing of death can only be confirmed after post-mortem reports are received. The bodies have been sent to the district hospital for autopsy.

Senior officers are questioning relatives, neighbours, and nearby residents to determine whether the family was facing financial hardship, domestic stress, or any other pressure.

The family’s recent behaviour and social background are also under scrutiny.

The incident has cast a sombre mood over the village. Police said further clarity will emerge once forensic analysis and post-mortem findings are completed.
