Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday emphasised that continuous efforts are being made to promote the Tamil language, both within India and internationally.

Speaking during his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister underlined how children and young people are increasingly connecting with Tamil, one of the world’s oldest living languages.

Sharing a heart-touching example from overseas, PM Modi spoke about an initiative in Fiji aimed at preserving and promoting the Indian language and culture.

He said authorities are making sustained efforts to connect the younger generation with the Tamil language.

The Prime Minister highlighted that a school in Raki-Raki, Fiji, celebrated Tamil Day for the first time in November.

During the event, children recited Tamil poems, delivered speeches and confidently showcased their cultural identity, reflecting a growing sense of pride in their linguistic heritage.

Efforts Within India

PM Modi said similar initiatives are underway across India to strengthen the reach of the Tamil language. He referred to the fourth edition of the Kashi Tamil Sangamam, held recently in his parliamentary constituency, Kashi (Varanasi).

During the programme, the Prime Minister played an audio clip of children speaking fluent Tamil and pointed out that they were students from Varanasi, where Hindi is the mother tongue.

He said their enthusiasm to learn Tamil demonstrated the unifying power of Indian languages and cultural curiosity among the younger generation.

The Prime Minister explained that this year’s Kashi Tamil Sangamam placed special emphasis on learning Tamil.

Under the theme ‘Learn Tamil – Tamil Karakalam’, organisers conducted dedicated campaigns in over 50 schools in Varanasi to encourage students to learn the language.

The fourth Kashi Tamil Sangamam took place from December 2 to December 15. Launched in 2022, the initiative aims to revive and strengthen the ancient civilisational, linguistic and spiritual ties between Tamil Nadu and Kashi.

Emphasising the significance of Tamil, PM Modi described it as the world’s oldest language with a remarkably rich literary tradition.

He expressed happiness over the renewed interest in Tamil among children and youth in different parts of the country.

The Prime Minister said this growing enthusiasm reflects not only the power of language but also the cultural unity of India, where linguistic diversity continues to serve as a source of strength and shared heritage.
