On September 6, 2024, the Manipur government announced the closure of all schools across the state for September 7 due to escalating violence. The Directorate of Education issued a directive stating that all government, private, and central schools would remain closed to ensure the safety of students and teachers.
The order emphasized, “In view of the unrest and prevailing situation in the state and keeping in mind the safety of the students and teachers, all government schools, government-aided, private, and central schools of the state will stay closed on September 7, 2024.”
It further instructed all Zonal Education Officers to inform relevant parties and take necessary actions.
The decision follows a surge in violence, including recent drone and gun attacks that have resulted in civilian casualties and injuries.
– Rocket Attack in Bishnupur: On September 6, suspected militants launched a rocket attack in Moirang, Bishnupur district. This attack killed an elderly man and injured five others, including a 13-year-old girl. The rocket hit the compound of former Chief Minister Mairembam Koireng’s residence, located just two kilometers from the historic INA headquarters.
– Other Attacks: Earlier in the day, militants attacked Tronglaobi, damaging local structures without causing casualties. Additionally, rockets fired from Churachandpur district targeted residential areas in Bishnupur, leading to a gunfight between militants and security forces.
– Drone Strikes in Senjam Chirang: A series of drone strikes injured three family members in Senjam Chirang village. Watham Gambhir, a 65-year-old farmer, described the terror of drones following them as they sought refuge under a tree.
The violence has intensified the long-standing conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which has claimed over 200 lives since May of last year.
– September 1 Attack: In Koutruk village, similar drone and gun assaults resulted in two deaths and nine injuries. The use of drones for bombings in civilian areas has raised significant concerns.

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh condemned the drone attacks as acts of terrorism. Rajya Sabha MP Sanajaoba Leishemba has formed a high-level committee to investigate the use of drones by militants. This committee, consisting of senior police and military officials, will examine the technology and methods used in these attacks. Their findings will focus on the origin of the drones and their modifications for precise and deadly strikes.
