At least 12 people died and 16 others were injured when a van was struck by a roadways bus on the Agra-Aligarh National Highway, near Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. The victims, who had attended a funeral in a nearby village, were on their way home when the accident occurred near Metei village, Hathras district.
According to the police, the bus hit the van while attempting to overtake it. Superintendent of Police Nipun Agarwal confirmed that the incident took place at around 6:45 pm on Friday, during heavy rainfall, which made the road slippery. The injured were taken to a government hospital for treatment, and officials fear the death toll could rise. Deputy Inspector General of Police, Aligarh, Salabh Mathur, added that the accident happened within the limits of Chandpa police station.
Officials quickly arrived at the scene, and the injured were transported to Bagla Hospital in Aligarh for medical care.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the victims’ families. He announced a compensation of ₹2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.
“May God give strength to the grieving families in this difficult time. I wish for the speedy recovery of those injured. The local administration, under state government supervision, is working to assist the victims,” the prime minister said.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also expressed his sadness over the loss of life. He directed the district administration to ensure proper treatment for the injured, saying, “The loss of life in a road accident in Hathras district is extremely sad. My condolences are with the grieving families of the deceased.”
An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident, with further updates expected as the situation develops.
