Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh Resigns Ahead Of Key Assembly Session

In a dramatic turn of events, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh submitted his resignation to Governor AK Bhalla on Sunday, just a day before the commencement of a crucial Assembly session. The resignation comes amid ongoing tensions in the state following ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023.

In his resignation letter to Governor Bhalla, Biren Singh expressed his deep gratitude to the Central government for its ‘timely actions, interventions, and developmental work’ aimed at safeguarding the interests of the people of Manipur. He requested that the government continue these efforts, highlighting several key initiatives.

Singh underscored the importance of maintaining the ‘territorial integrity of Manipur,’ emphasizing the state’s rich and diverse civilizational history that spans thousands of years. He also appreciated the Central government’s actions to combat border infiltration and its efforts to create policies for the deportation of illegal immigrants.

Additionally, Singh cited the government’s commitment to fighting drug trafficking and narco-terrorism as major achievements.

Efforts To Strengthen Border Security And Immigration Policies

In his letter, the outgoing Chief Minister elaborated on several policies implemented during his tenure. These included the ‘stringent and fool-proof revised mechanism of FMR’ with biometric data being strictly enforced, as well as a time-bound initiative to improve border security.

Nongthombam Biren Singh, 64, assumed office as Manipur’s 12th Chief Minister on March 15, 2017, after leading the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to a historic victory in the state. He successfully retained power in the 2022 Assembly elections, marking his second term in office.

However, his leadership has faced significant challenges, particularly after ethnic violence erupted between the Meiti and Kuki-Zo communities in May 2023. The violence has overshadowed much of his second term, raising questions about his ability to manage the state’s complex political and social landscape.

Looking Ahead: Uncertainty Over Political Future

With Singh’s resignation, the political future of Manipur remains uncertain as the state prepares for its upcoming Assembly session. The resignation marks the end of a turbulent chapter in Manipur’s governance, with many awaiting further developments in the leadership transition.
