West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee emphasized the importance of a politically unbiased and honest judicial system during her address at the Regional Conference of the National Judicial Academy on Saturday.

Banerjee emphasized West Bengal’s judicial initiatives. She stated, “West Bengal hosts 88 fast-track courts, with 55 dedicated solely to women, and operates 99 human rights courts. I passionately advocate for a national judicial system that remains entirely unbiased, pure, and honest, emphasizing the importance of maintaining secrecy in all judicial proceedings.”

Asserting her connection to the legal fraternity through her law degree, Banerjee expressed, “I consider myself a member of the legal fraternity. I remain a member of the bar association and have personally appeared as counsel in some cases. For me, the judicial system is as sacred as a temple, church, mosque, or Gurdwara.”

Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud and Calcutta High Court Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam were among the dignitaries present at the event.

Meanwhile, Banerjee underscored the state government’s commitment to supporting the judicial system.

She stated, “The primary duty of the judicial system is to protect the common people. If the system fails them, who else will they turn to? The common people believe only the judicial system can alleviate their grievances.”

She praised Justice Chandrachud for his contributions to enhancing the country’s judicial framework.

She further noted, “The state government has invested approximately Rs 1,000 crore towards enhancing the judicial infrastructure.”

Banerjee’s remarks however underscore her dedication to upholding the integrity and effectiveness of the judiciary, advocating for its pivotal role in safeguarding justice and fairness for all citizens.
